CHALLENGING SOCIETY’S LABELS
Have you ever noticed how we sometimes treat people who don’t fit the mold of what’s considered “normal”? We tend to judge them based on their appearance or circumstances.
For instance, someone might struggle with their weight due to various reasons, such as medication or personal challenges. Kids, however, may not always understand this. We should teach them not to judge others solely based on how they look.
The same goes for individuals who are underweight. They often face ridicule and are given hurtful nicknames.
Acne is another example. It might surprise you to learn that in France, it’s a significant factor leading to suicide.
There’s often societal pressure to engage in sexual activity at an early age, and those who don’t, can be stigmatized.
Some people are introverted because they find the outside world intimidating. A quick look at comments on social media platforms like Facebook, Youtube, or Twitter can reveal some unkind behavior.
It’s worth noting that our behavior isn’t solely determined by genetics. Sometimes, it feels like some individuals are simply unkind by nature.
Consider the struggles of someone who wants to openly share their sexual orientation, be it gay, trans, or bi. Society’s reaction can be incredibly harsh. We sometimes use religion to justify our unkindness, claiming that God created us strictly as men or women.
In a nutshell, some people struggle with insecurity more than others because they haven’t yet learned how to stand up for themselves. Others might be so engulfed in their pain that they don’t realize there’s a way out.
My friend faced various challenges. He excelled academically and was labeled a “nerd.” He wore glasses and was teased for it. Acne made it difficult for people to approach him. Him being naturally slender, he was often called “weak” and sometimes pushed around.
Now, at 23, he prematurely graying due to a combination of stress, genetics, and other factors. He expected to be called “Grandpa” much later in life.
However, he has learned how to assert himself. He is well-regarded both at his university and his workplace.
He don’t fight back because he believe everyone will become kinder someday. Sadly, that ship has sailed. People are suffering from starvation in Africa while we waste tons of food daily. It’s a grim reality.
He stands up because he want to show that there are others like him out there. He wants to prove to that kid with acne that not everyone is unkind, that there’s hope for them to thrive.
And you know what? I’d be honored to be friends with those individuals. They tend to be some of the warmest, most compassionate, and open-minded people you’ll ever meet.
